Flower Circle

Gold circle with arches around it creating a flower

A living experiment
in nature and human flourishing

When I picture my future self at eighty, I wonder what she would tell me to stop postponing. Her answer was simple: create the Flower Circle.

The Flower Circle is an immersive space where you can see no human-made thing. Just flowers and sky.

What happens when we are surrounded readily, entirely by nature?

This page is a running field log documenting the build from bare ground to full bloom — the soil, the planting, the waiting, and what I notice inside the circle.

Field Notes

This is a running field log. Entries are added chronologically.

Day — May

I have carried an image for years: myself in old age, sitting in the sun, surrounded by flowers. I assumed it was a later-in-life thing. Then I asked myself why. Why am I postponing?

Day — May 31
Hi I want to grow tall flowers in a circle…I want a moderate cost, nominal maintinance. 6 foot circle around an object like a chair. Part Sun, Lawn/Grass ideally reach 4-5 feet. Direct sow of seed outside. Watering 1-2/week, staking if needed. A Wild joyful mix. How much soil do I need?

Day — June 5
On Honeymoon. Order flowers.

Day — June 16
Shared Flower Circle Reflection at Open Mic tonight. Share the Intention. Saying a thing out loud to a room is its own kind of commitment.

Day — June 17
How much soil do I need? Purchased Soil: Round 1.

Day — June 18
Squirt mustard to lay out circle at 12, 3, 6 and 9 — clock method. Used a doormat to mark the entry point. Cardboard down over the grass.

Day — June 19
How much soil do I need? Way more.
Adjusted to an eight-foot circle. Tried to preorder a pickup. That did not work.

Day — June 20
Way more soil work. Refine soil with rake. Press down with cardboard to level. Stake. Water.

Day — June 21
Planted on the Summer Solstice. Start with the big ones. Layout at 12, 3 and 9. Marigold border. At the end just throw some stuff on. Watered. Wait. Already evidence of animal interest.

Day — June 22
No animal interest overnight and It Rained! 🙌

Day — June 26
Germination! 6 days after planting. It rained beautifully this week. Nice mix of deep rain and sun. I thinned some clustered seedlings.

Day — July 5

Day — July 10
Limited rain this week so we have been watering. Tallest seedlings are 3.5 inches. I’ve continued thinning over seeding. But I am worried the seedlings are too spaced out for full coverage? I planted according to directions but this leaves 8 to 12 inches between seedlings.
